A Nudist Is :

A nudist is an individual who prefers to be in a state of undress. This may be within the privacy of their home, but more often it involves social nudity or nude recreation. The person who considers him or herself a nudist essentially does all of the things that a non-nudist does, they simply happen to do them without clothing when possible.

Many nudists wear clothing. They might wear business clothes at work or go to a parent teacher conference fully clothed. In fact, many people would probably be surprised by how many of their colleagues and peers prefer a naturist lifestyle. Those who are nudists tend not to advertise their preference. A business executive may wear a suit to work, but prefer to vacation at a resort where clothing is optional. Nudists are not ashamed of their choice. Rather, many of them make the conscious decision to keep certain portions of their lifestyle private as a personal preference.

Nudism is primarily about acceptance. Those who choose this lifestyle recognize that nakedness is the natural human state. There are no size or appearance requirements. People of all shapes and sizes may find freedom and enjoyment through going without clothing. Nudism is an act of self love; a declaration that the nudist wholly loves and accepts their entire being. It’s also a great way to get beyond the superficiality that is often governed by clothing. Since nudists operate under the philosophy of total body acceptance for themselves, this acceptance stretches to all the people around them. As a result, nude recreation contributes to a relaxing atmosphere that is free of judgment.

In fact, many people who try nudism for the first time are amazed at how liberated and comfortable they feel without clothing. They are able to enjoy the feeling of the sun and the wind over their entire body, and they appreciate being able to focus on the world around them rather than being concerned with their appearance. Although many people choose to try nudism on their own or as part of a couple, those new to the lifestyle should be aware that the clothing free lifestyle is a family-friendly choice. Many resorts and other facilities that are set aside for use by nudists include activities and recreation for every member of the family. Children and young adults can gain enormous confidence and get beyond the awkwardness of the various developmental stages by learning to love and accept their bodies no matter how they look.

Most people who are unfamiliar with naturism are shocked to learn that it can be a family-friendly pursuit. However, it’s important to understand that nudism is not sexual. Being a nudist does not mean participating in orgies or sexual activities. Most who commonly practice the lifestyle come to accept the body as merely an instrument. They derive no inappropriate pleasure or thrill from viewing other nudists. They simply welcome their peers as fellow devotees of a lifestyle that embraces freedom and personal choice.

Nudism is not for everyone, but millions of people around the world enjoy living without clothing for at least some portion of their lives. Those who try it usually find freedom and acceptance that they had not previously thought was possible.

The basic definition of a Nudist is a person who goes nude at home, outdoors and various (nonsexual) settings, either alone or among others. It might be for health reasons, for fun, for comfort or any variety of reasons. It also means – a person that practices Nudism / Naturism.

With that said, the simple definition is one that has recently caused some issues. There are people who believe that there is a far deeper meaning and that a person who practices nude recreation and social nudism is not automatically a nudist and does not have the “right” to use that label. So this begs the question, what is a nudist by today’s definition and what does one need to do (or not do) to qualify to use this label? Thanks to social networks and the online world, many people think that they are all-knowing and that without their stamp of approval, people do not qualify.

What Jordan (Co-Founder of YNA) Thinks About The Term Nudist :

As far as I am concerned, a rose by any other name….. basically Nudism is the practice of non sexual social nude activities and non-sexual nude recreation as a whole. I think that all the nudists out there in the world today can agree on one thing – sex is not part of the equation. So as far as I am concerned, a person that enjoys and takes part in social nude activities without a sexual purpose can indeed call themselves nudists.

Issues With Using The Term Nudist :

The problem is that there is somewhat of a negative connotation associated with the term “nudist.” In the USA people automatically think of old, overweight people when someone brings up that term. On the flip side, people in the mainstream think of hippies and free love / sex. So perhaps it is time to coin a new term… one that is free on any connotation whatsoever. We thought that terms like Nudie or New-Age Nudist might work to enable us to start off fresh. But we are currently giving this some thought and welcome opinions from anyone and everyone.
