Mohonk Preserve Nude Trail At Split Rock
While we still have some beautiful fall days left, I wanted to share a clothing-optional place to go where you can also get your outdoor / fall foliage fix ! It’s located in the Mohonk Preserve in the town of New Paltz in upstate New York. It’s about an hour and half drive from NYC.
Mohonk Preserve - We went there on a sunny day in August. There are numerous hiking and mountain biking trails all over this mountainous rural area, not to mention rock climbing and various other outdoor activities you can do there. The place we went to is a clothing-optional section on the Coxing Trail. The closest parking lot is at the Coxing Trail Head. This was full upon our afternoon arrival so we took a short hike from further down, which was a nice hike anyway! The trail runs along a stream called Coxing Kill, and first you pass through the clothing-required part, along with a popular spot called Split Rock. Then a ways down you reach this sign posted on a tree…
And you can remove all clothing and be as freely nude as the wildlife! A little further down we found the area where people (mostly men on this day) hang out on the flat rock lounging out in chairs or on towels. It’s in the middle of the woods so there’s a mix of shade and sun. The stream of water moves steadily around the rock, creating pools and little waterfalls. So pretty and serene!
However the water was ice cold, so swimming is best reserved for hot summer days. The area is thick with trees and plenty of natural vegetation for the senses to feast on. Check out these orange mushrooms I spotted and a butterfly in motion!
We haven’t been back since August, but I’ll bet it’s gorgeous there this time of year! Anyone up for a clothing-optional hike this fall?

It's illegal to show skin in most places, but the wildreness is so remote (in AZ) there's no bluenoses to call the cops. Even if there was there's no cell tower in the canyon & the cops would have to drive tons of miles. Stop urban sprawl & save the wilderness!
I was there a couple of times. Beautiful and natural scenery, but that water is just too cold and shallow for my taste.
Thank you. I heard about this a long time ago and I didn't know whether it was still available to us.
